Learn about Homeschooling

When we started our homeschooling journey I had so much to learn. I have read many books, even more websites and have over the years come to an approach that fits our family beliefs (hence this website!)

My husband, Peter, is a Vet and as a professional he has a legal requirement to study and develop his knowledge and skills. Early in our marriage it struck us that homemaking and raising a family was my career and I too needed to develop my knowledge and skills. I was very blessed with an upbringing that did give me the basics but there is always so much to learn. With this understanding I read books, talked to women and intentionally worked on being a better homemaker and mother.

It was with this approach that we faced homeschooling. I read books and talked to women and intentionally learnt about homeschooling. I would like to share with you the books that have helped me formulate the Lifestyle/Discipleship model of homeschooling.

These are my top recommended books:

I Saw the Angel in the Marble by Chris and Ellyn Davis
This is the book that brought it all together for us – I can’t recommend it enough. This book made us consider the hearts of our children over the traditionally seen education. It made us realize the full implications of why we were homeschooling. At that stage there were things that we believed that we were not practicing. After reading this book – we had to change!

A Biblical Home Education: Building Your Homeschool on the Foundation of God's Word by Ruth Beechick
This book breaks down all the traditionally held “school” subjects and puts them into the context of studying in a family. I cannot read enough of Ruth Beechick though this title is a definite for starting out and developing your philosophy.

A lifestyle of Learning Approach by Marilyn Howshall
Though this series of booklets is no longer available I want to give credit to the place that these books have had in my journey. You can read some articles at Homeschool Oasis. Marilyn’s writings made me realize the educational opportunities that are in our everyday life.

The Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach: Bible Based Homeschooling by Robin Sampson
This book is full of insights and is helpful to homeschool families even if you don’t use the Heart of Wisdom units. I dip into this book every year and refresh myself on the truths and principles laid out there. In particular the challenge to spend substantial time in the Word with our children.

Educating the Wholehearted Child Revised & Expanded by Clay and Sally Clarkson
This book gives a good overview of various methods and teaching approaches so you can see your choices though it is written from a discipleship perspective. Many practical helps such as organization, choosing curriculum, and getting through your day. A very practical book.

All the best with your journey as you learn more about Homeschooling. I hope that Lifestyle-Homeschol will be a part of your journey. Feel free to Contact Me if you have any questions about homescooling.

Live life with your kids!
