Helping Teens (or anyone) live by their Goals - Issue 192
March 18, 2011
Hi there! ....

This week has been about getting ready to head south for a homeschool conference. I had visions of being ready by last weekend so that I could spend the first few days of this week with the kids – but that was not a realistic goal. So instead of me spending time with the kids (on their lessons) they have spent time with me, helping me finalise bits and pieces. Probably a better solution anyway! We need to remember that an aspect of discipleship is inviting the kids into our life.

Live life with your kids!

If you are an Australian reader I would appreciate you reading this special request.

Helping Teens live by their Goals
(or helping anyone live by their goals)

At the beginning of the year – for want of a better time – did you sit down with your teen and talk about what their goals and ideas were for the coming year. If you didn’t, then there is no time like the present to do so. If our older children are going to take ownership of their life they are going to have to know what is important to them; what goals and priorities they have. I doubt many teens have this sorted for every area of their life which is why they still have parents! We need to help them – we need to let them take responsibility for areas where they are ready to take responsibility and we need to be encouraging them to pick up responsibility in the other areas.

Our daughter Jessica expressed some very clear goals for this year – she wanted to be able to say she studied well this year. She knows there will be other things to do, other projects and other opportunities but she wants to decide those based upon this goal of completing her goals in Science, History and Writing. They are good goals, she has her reasons for them, and we are willing to support her in sticking to them.

This means though that we need to remind her and give her the courage to stick by them. Just this weekend an opportunity has arisen – a good opportunity – an opportunity to stand up for God – but, is it the right opportunity, the God-opportunity for her at this moment in time? Though we didn’t tell her which decision to make we were there as she was processing the pros and cons. She came to a point where she was torn so we reminded her of her big picture goal, and assured her that she was ‘allowed’ to say no.

One lesson that I have learnt in our homeschooling is that it is very tempting to pick up an opportunity because you think it will be the ONLY opportunity you have. Our teens can have that mentality too – if I don’t do it now, I’ll have missed it. That is not true. If it is an opportunity that God wants for you it will be available to you in the right season of life.

There is no reason good enough to cram up our life with good opportunities and in the process miss the God-opportunities. We need to give our children the courage and confidence to know the difference.
