Is your Lifestyle working for you? Live life with your kids - Issue 123
October 16, 2009
Hi there! ....

This week
Each year the churches get together and run the Christmas Carols event in town. This week the choir started their practices. There are several community events throughout the year that play a big part in our children’s education – this is one of them. The Christmas Carols gives the kids an opportunity to be involved in a choir, to work together with others, to receive instruction from another person, to perform in public and to be involved in a church and community event. This year is Daniel’s first year so the girls are busy teaching him the words. Each year they have grown in some way by being involved. I love it when these learning situations rise out of our family activities.

Live life with your kids!

Is your lifestyle working for you?

With the idea of ‘lifestyle homeschool’ it is easy to become complaisant and just take life as it comes, knowing that our children are learning. And yet, that isn’t the fullest picture that I try to paint. I believe that we need to be teaching and training our children, that our children are our disciples and if our lifestyle isn’t presenting us with opportunities, or we are not deliberate in picking up those opportunities our lifestyle is not working for us.

Though I have called my website, Lifestyle Homeschool the important thing to me is the discipleship factor. My lifestyle gives me the opportunity to disciple my children. As we live life with our kids, that is as we

  • work together
  • travel together
  • worship together
  • read and learn together
  • play and relax together (and so forth)
I have the opportunity to teach and train my child – to help them be all that they can be in every facet of their life.

What is your heart’s desire for each of your children?
What is your heart’s desire for your family?
Do these things translate into goals?
And then the important question is – are you working towards these things?

To meet goals is always a deliberate thing. Setting goals in the first place is a deliberate act, but we cannot achieve our goals without intentional, planned steps. Has the idea of lifestyle – taking life as it comes – taken away your intentionality, purpose and goals for your children? Lifestyle Homeschool is about letting our lifestyle be used to reach our goals. It is about not compartmentalising our life – into family time and learning time – it is about using everything that makes up our life as a part of our educational experiences.

If you feel that the level of intentionality has slipped I encourage you to

  1. Look at each of your children (separately), and prayerfully consider one aspect of their life that needs your attention. It could be in the area of their relationships (with God or man), in their taking on responsibilities, in their emotional intelligence (intrapersonal skills), in developing their talents, or in their academic learning. Each aspect of their life needs us giving guidance, direction and challenge as they grow up. (Check out each of these areas on my website if you wonder what each of these areas actually cover.)
  2. Look at the things in your family life at the moment – your commitments, your responsibilities, your interests, your daily activities. Ask yourself this question – what happens in your day, or in your week, that would give you an opportunity to help that child grow and learn?
  3. Look again at your commitments etc and ask a different question – what things happen in your day, or in your week that stop you, hinder you, or distract you from being with your children and teaching them the things you know needs to be taught, whether it is a moral lesson or an academic lesson.

Answering these questions will help align your lifestyle with your goals. You may need to use the opportunities your lifestyle already offers or you may need to change your lifestyle in order to be intentional and work towards the things on your heart for your family.
