Are we Responsible? - Live life with your kids - Issue 051
April 25, 2008
Hi! ....

This week:

One of the things that I learnt in taking Daniel down south for those two weeks of intensive therapy was the benefit of intensive focus. With that in mind I have set aside this week, and next, for two weeks of intensive focus on Reading Journals. We invited another family to join us and though that involves a little travel, shared between the two of us, it has held us accountable to this goal. I am forever amazed that when I read a ‘living book” to the children of the depth and variety of topics discussed.

It was Daniel’s birthday this week and Jess threw him a Space Party. She organized the food, the decorations, the invitations and the games. Though it was a theme party we decided against dressups. Nomi painted a large rocket which we used as a photo-shoot opportunity as everyone went flying to the moon! I love to see the girls work together on projects like this – though it was Jessica’s project she made room for Nomi and her particular talents. Daniel said he had the best time! We hope his guests did too.

Character Notes for Mums

Are we Responsible?

Knowing and doing what God
and others are expecting of me

Power for True Success p. 153

One would wonder why we need to study Responsibility – afterall, we are parents, we are mum, we may even be homeschooling – how responsible is all that! Being responsible isn’t about the tasks or assignments we take on – it is more about how we spend our moments.

This year I have been challenged to journal about my yesterday and to consider

  • how did I do in light of the things God has been talking to me about
  • did I achieve my goals and what hindered me, and most importantly
  • how can I do better and go on from here today

A man reaps what he sows

Galatians 6:7

We need to accept our responsibilities, be diligent and thorough. Depending on the area we are working on it may take a day or a week, or it may take years to see the fruit of our decisions. But we must daily, moment by moment, decide to do what is right, to do what God is expecting of us.

The fruit of our decision can be positive or negative. Of course we like the positive fruit – we like to see our children blossoming, we like to see our house gleaming and our husband happy. What happens when we renege on our responsibilities, or what is more likely – attend to them half heartedly? We try and ignore this negative fruit, but eventually it will be like the rotten potato left undetected in the cupboard – it stinks! And it permeates everywhere!

Now, a person who is put in
charge as a manager
must be faithful

1 Corinthians 4:2 (NLT)

As mums, we are managers – we manage the day to day comings and goings of our family and of our home. We must acknowledge that the buck stops with us – it is our task to keep things running smoothly. This verse calls us to be faithful. How I long to hear God say, “Well done, good and faithful servant”. I must not get weary and yet it is so easy to tire of the same tasks – day after day after day. I need to remember that God is my strength – He called me to this task, He will strengthen me for it.

What are the responsibilities that you know you have not been responsible with? I encourage you to write them down – face them – think about it carefully and make wise decisions in regards to going on from here.

A caution though – there is a tendency to take on responsibilities that God does not require of us. What does God require of you today? Ask and He will reveal it to you. When we take on extra responsibilities, tasks, assignments, we are heading for a big dose of anxiety. We won’t be able to achieve half of what we set out to do and yet when we remain true to God’s assignment for the day we will have success.
